HEIDI'S CREATIVE OIL PAINTING CLASS SUPPLIES
Please choose non-toxic paints for younger teens.
- Paints: Student Quality Winton, Daler-Rowney’s Georgian or Grumbacher Academy are good brands. I usually purchase them at www.dickblick.com or Michaels; however, Hobby Lobby often has a good price on the Academy Titanium White.
- Crimson Alizarin
- Cadmium Red Medium or Cadmium Red Light (Red Light necessary for skin tones)
- Cadmium Yellow Pale Hue (Winton Brand #8) this is a primary yellow—purchase the Winton brand Yellow Ochre (only necessary for skin tones—optional color if not doing people)
- Cerulean Blue or Cerulean Blue Hue
- Ultramarine Blue
- Soft Mixing White (Best) OR Titanium White
- Viridian or Viridian Hue Cadmium Orange—optional color
- Dioxanine Purple (Optional for Now: Transparent Red Oxide: Rembrandt, Zieglers—but if you find a good price—any brand—get it)
- Brushes: An assortment of Bristle or Hogs Hair brushes—flats. They usually come in a set of twelve for around $6 OR one #4 and one #8 Hogs Hair filberts—Winton, Windsor Newton, etc.
- Palette Choices:
- A medium to large wooden palette with a thumb hole will work fine. Ziegler’s sells these for around $3-$5. If using a wooden palette, you will need a way to transport the paint on the palette home. Paint (out of the tube) can be frozen or submerged under water for longevity. Clear plastic shoe box works well for transportation.
- Masterson makes a plastic palette (looks like a cake box with a blue lid) for around $15. This will solve the transporting paint home problem and the entire box can be filled with water. If using this palette, a piece of glass (Best hardware) needs to be fitted into the bottom, bring few q-tips & clove oil. A window scraper—that uses razor blades will be needed for this palette, too—Best Hardware.
- Palette Knife: Metal with wood handles—no plastic ones.
- Medium: Odorless mineral spirits (Wal-mart). Bring a glass or plastic jar with lid and two tuna (or soup) cans.
- Latex gloves
- 16”x 20” canvas: These go on sale often at Michaels—two for $5 or $6.
- Paper Towels or rags (Shop towels are great—$1.50 at Wal-mart—may bring in cut up t-shirts
- Bag or Box to carry supplies in
- Plastic Bags for paper towel trash (bring one or two to each class)
- Wear old clothes or bring apron or smock.
- Easel: Stanrite Aluminum easel (2lbs.) from www.dickblick.com--around $50 or under; or any easels sold locally that are portable and for standing while painting. Michaels uses Hobby Lobby coupons--(We have some easels in the classroom)
